NFL Replacement Refs

Postby FSF Bastetovski » Wed Sep 26, 2012 6:46 pm

After watching a clip of the Packers and Sea Hawks game, I have came to this conclusion that the two old geezers in the Muppet Show would be a much better referees than the Replacement Refs. They even need to get their eyesight checked because it is obvious that there was a passing interference that should have stopped the game, as well as who ACTUALLY had the ball! Even I can tell who had the ball with my contacts and/or glasses off, considering I'm nearsighted as everything without them.

Anyone knows where those two old geezers from the Muppet Show are at? The NFL should hire them!

Looks like that game finally sped things up in negotiations and regular refs are back starting tonight :) I think what bothered me most about the replacement ref's goofs was the improper marking off of penalty yards. I can understand missing a call, but not knowing how many yards to mark off or from where is really inexcusable.

I'm so glad that the REAL refs are coming back! I don't see how, during the Packers and Sea Hawk game, anyone would miss that it was an interception? Even us fans could tell that it was an interception. I do understand that there may be some mistakes here and there, but big ones like that? Where did they find these replacement refs anyways?

I completely agree. The Pats/Ravens game was a disaster referee wise, and we don't need those replacements screwing things up any further. I am glad an agreement has been reached

I feel somewhat bad for them, I don't think many expected the jump to NFL to be so severe. It also didn't help that the players decided to try to get away with whatever, thus causing the refs to get overwhelmed. At least the real refs on Thursday let the benches and teams know none of that crap will be allowed to continue.

I'm glad the real refs are back. These replacements didn't know what they were walking into and the players took advantage of that.

It wasn't only the players. Coaches were trying to take advantage as well by breaking that rule where they aren't supposed to you know, grab the refs and insist that they turn calls over, without throwing a challenge flag

Yeah... I think the coaches were the worst offenders honestly. I'm just glad a few of them got fined for some of it.

In all honesty I think the refs created many of the situations that gave something coaches to scream at, but it doesn't mean the coaches weren't out of line

It's not even their fault though. You have people being hired just to enable the game to continue being played, but with nowhere near the skills or training necessary to do it appropriately. The replacement refs were put into a position where they were set up by the NFL to fail though. They at least stepped up to fill in the ref void during the strikes. That's more than anyone else can say. And let's also not forget that their contribution allowed the NFL season to continue instead of be delayed or cancelled entirely. Hockey can't say the same thing, although that's for slightly different reasons I imagine.

I remember when MLB Umps went on strike. It was a disaster especially since it affected the playoffs that particular year

Indeed, I agree with Bri, the replacement Refs were given the book, and a few classes, and called it good. The last time there was a strike, DivI and IAA refs stepped up, which didn't cause a massive drop off in abilities, as the highest level of college is only 1 step below NFL. They were given a crash course in rules that not even college has (multiple challenge flags, what plays are automatically reviewed, which plays are not allowed to be reviewed, etc).

Fans often blame key calls on the refs without due cause, and while now that the regular refs are back, some fans may have a slightly greater appreciation of what they do

fans often blame a lot of people while having no actual idea of what it takes to do the job, or make the calls.

That being said... "Professional Athletes" get paid entirely too much.

I agree... but I do bring up the fact that if they weren't getting the money... someone else in that chain of revenue would be... whether it's the owners or the NFL itself... so that's my major concern. If the players stop getting paid outrageous amounts (which they won't given last season's player's union issues...), whose pockets does that money then go towards lining?

The lockout that threatened last season was in essence over money, as was the NBA lockout that knocked out 1/3 of the season. It gets ridiculous sometimes

most of these guys make more in a year then I will ever see my entire life, and they A. still complain about needing more money, and B. half of them still somehow manage to end up in financial trouble... it just amazes me sometimes.

It's like the saying "absolute power, corrupts absolutely" because when you have THAT much money, you often spend it recklessly. Why? Because everyone else is!
