The Nacelle Accelerator

Postby achillain » Wed Aug 18, 2010 1:59 pm

After the development of the LSGA-R1, Starfleet looked at a ship-mounted version of this weapon. Quite quickly, Starfleet R&D at Utopia Planitia came up with a system.

After some initial experiments, they found that every space-faring starship already had the required systems and hardware to accelerate a projectile to FTL speeds. They found that by scaling up the LSGA-R1 projectile system, they were able to use the Warp nacelles of a Starship to accelerate the Projectile into the subspace barrier, and thus to FTL speeds.

They did this by incorporating a Subspace fold manipulator at the front of the Warp nacelle, and a launch mechanism for the projectile at the rear.

The Ship then powers up the Warp Drive, and engages a Warp-capable Subspace field. However, a subspace containment field added to the nacelles shunt the subspace fields back inwards on the nacelle and converge on the Projectile, which then accelerates down the length of the nacelle and through the Subspace fold manipulator and into the Subspace barrier. As the projectile passes through the subspace barrier, it is unhindered by physical objects and is only affected by Gravitational effects and subspace fields.

Test showed that firing this weapon in orbit of a planet was possible, but the subspace/gravitational crossover effect did lead to the projectiles diverging from their trajectories. However, the engineers found that by compiling the subspace field within the projectile correctly, they could cause it to be drawn towards subspace fields, such as that used by Starship in Shields, Artificial gravity units and Warp Drive systems.

After a pre-set trigger (time, distance or some other trigger), the subspace field being created by the manipulator within the projectile collapses, forcing the projectile back out of the Subspace barrier and into the physical world. There, the stress of crossing the barrier would created stress fractures in the projectile, meaning that when it impacted, it fragmented, causing more of the kinetic energy of the projectile to be transferred to the target.

This....scares me.
An object would be possessed of near-infinite kinetic energy as it departed the Cochrane subset! This is what the Galactic Patrol did to the planet Ploor (and its sun)...the star instantly went supernova and the planet? We haven't a clue.
Please...DON'T try this at home!

I want one... This is a really nice idea and I think that the damage that could be caused by this is immense if the ship didn't have shields online when it was struck.

Uhhh,Mike? Shields will shred like tissue paper if they get whacked with this!
I have two possible defenses:
1) A Bergenholm inertialess generator. This device, while not a faster-than-light drive in itself, allows the inertia of matter to be suspended. A person wearing one could jump from the top of the Sears Tower and when he hit the ground he would just...stop. No shock, no splat. Go to the Moon, turn it on, point a laser pointer at the ground...and go to lightspeed immediately.
I'll save the other one...

A mega sized FTL Rail gun.
The thing I would worry about is the chances of even a speck of dust in the way,
As a object accelerates it's mass does so too And even a Standing object would have the same take place via it's relative stability ( IE A object with infinite velocity vs a object it inflate stability) so physics say that an object approaching or breaching the speed of light on impact with anything would more or less result in a explosion. That's Why Star ships have navigational deflectors as a method of clearing the path in front of the ship too prevent it from being vaporized in a accident. in essence the problem would be any space junk would set off the same boom.
A immovable object +a unstoppable one = BIG BOOM!

Which tells us JUST how to avoid it...Have an old-fashioned Traveller Sandcaster on board.
This was intended to dispense reflective sand between you and a laser-using attacker...nut it would defeat the FTL Railgun too!
