Linear Accelerator Weapons

During the Mid 21st Century, the technological development of High powered weapons started to include various types of Linear Accelerator principles to increase the penetration and lethality of weapons.

The most common form of Accelerator was the Linear Magnetic Accelerator (LMA).

LMA weapons came in two forms, but always used the same underlying principle to accelerate a projectile. A LMA was built by constructing a linear line of magnetic coils that would be pulse activated in a specifically set up sequence. Then by introducing a projectile made out of a magnetically inductive material (usually Ferrous metals), the rapid change in magnetic fields would then move the projectile down the length of the weapons barrel at extreme velocities.

As mentioned, there were two forms of LMA, these were referred to as Pushers and Pullers. These two differing principles of Linear Acceleration worked on the same core principle, but had different effects.

The Puller (often noted as LMA-) worked by timing the magnetic pulse in such a way that the projectile would be "pulled" towards the magnetic field. This allowed for rapid acceleration and quick firing rates. As such, it was the most common form of Personal LMA weapon.

The Pusher (LMA+) worked by using two magnetic fields. The first would form a magnetic field within the Projectile. Then a second magnetic field, in a reverse polarity to the first would form behind the projectile, effectively Pushing it down the barrel. Whilst this method required more energy to form the required magnetic fields, it often resulted in much more energetic projectiles, allowing for much more powerful weapons. These were often used as Vehicle mounted weapons in order to supply the larger amounts of energy.


During the 22nd Century, as scientist and technicians began to build better Gravitational Manipulation devices, they managed to incorporate these into Linear Acceleration weapons. These became known as Linear Gravity Accelerator (LGA) weapons. They worked on similar principles to LMA weapons. LGA- weapons worked by pulsing a pocket if high gravity down the weapon, causing the Projectile to be Pulled down the barrel. LGA+ weapons worked by using Anti-gravity fields to push the projectiles.

Unlike LMA weapons, LGA- weapons were found to have much higher velocities, due to the gravity well that travelled down the barrel. This pocket of gravity would move any particles out of the way of the Projectile (such as atmosphere), meaning there was less drag and atmospheric resistance whilst the projectile accelerated. However, due to the fact that a Positive gravity field was being created, as the weapon fired, it would get heavier and would be pulled off-target by the Gravity field. This led to LGA- weapons being vehicle mounted. LGA+ used Anti-gravity fields, which whilst it did not reduce drag or resistance, did make the weapons lighter as they fired, causing less recoil and greater accuracy.


However, Particle weapons such as the EM Pistol and the Phase Pistol came into popularity, meaning that "outdated" projectile weapons became less popular amongst armed forces. However, the principles used in LMA and LGa weapons played a massive role in the development of Particle beam weapons. The technological advances in Linear Accelerators allowed for much more controlled and refined particle beams to be formed by weapons.

For the rest of the 22nd and the entirety of the 23rd and 24th centuries, particle weapons have been the weapon of choice by armed forces across the Galaxy. However, as a weapon becomes more popular, defences against these weapon also become popular.Energy absorption matrices, energy dampening forcefields and such have become commonplace in the defensive itineraries of armed forces. This has often caused weapon developers to look at alternative weapon designs. And in some cases they have also looked "backwards" at projectile weapons. Whilst less popular due their lethality, alternative projectiles have been developed to allow for Less-than- and Non-Lethal weapons to be developed.

The development of Non-particle weapons became a hot topic during the Borg Crisis's of the late 24th Century. Due to the Borg's adaptability to particle weaponry, but near defencelessness against physical weapons, Projectile weapons became an area of interest.


One of the most advanced weapons to be formed by these developments have been Linear Subspace Gravimetric Accelerator (LSGA) Weapons.

These weapons use the Subspace/Gravitational cross-over effect to create very powerful weapons that are able to accelerate projectiles to tremendous velocities. In most cases, these weapons have to be limited due to their velocity potential.

A LMA weapon had the potential to accelerate a projectile to approximately 4-6 times the speed of sound. LGA weapons could reach 9-11 times the speed of sound. Theoretically, a LSGA weapon is able to accelerate a projectile to FTL speeds due to the mass-reductive properties of subspace fields. In most cases, a LSGA weapon that is going to be used inside an atmosphere is limited to 20-22 times the speed of sound. Any faster, and friction would cause the projectile to melt before it reached the target.

LSGA weapons work by having two intersecting subspace fields. One field is caused by a field manipulator within the Projectile. This field surrounds the bullet and allows it to move through normal space at super-fast velocities. The second field is created by the Subspace coils of the weapon. These field lines intersect around the projectile, causing gravitational wakes to form, which then accelerate the projectile down the length of the barrel. As there is no mass changes within the barrel as often occurred with LGA weapons, there is no effect on accuracy of the weapon. However, the gravitational wakes formed around the projectile move atmospheric particles around the projectile, severely reducing drag on the projectile. As the projectile leaves the barrel, the gravitational wakes subside, and the subspace field formed by the field manipulator in the projectile alters to a more stream-lined form, allowing it to pass through the atmosphere with ease.

These weapons have also been manufactured to be space-born weapons, which are able to achieve FTL speeds. Allowing the projectiles to impact with tremendous forces.

Some LSGA weapons also incorporate subspace fold-manipulators that allow the projectiles to briefly pass through the Subspace barrier, effectively "transporting" the projectile across vast distances almost instantaneously.

LSGA weapons are highly adaptive and can be incorporated into many other weapon systems. They also have the potential to be highly destructive if used correctly.


A chemically accelerated projectile (5.56mm) moving at would have approximately 3.8 Newtons of force behind it. (Worked out at 940 m/s)
A LMA firing a similarly weighted projectile (4 grams) would have approximately 6.8 N of force behind it. (Worked out at Mach 5)
A LGA firing the same projectile would have approximately 13.7 N of force behind it. (Worked out at Mach 10)
A LSGA firing the same projectile would have approximately 28.5 N of force behind it. (Worked out at Mach 21)
A LSGA weapon, fired in a vacuum, using Warp 2 equivalent acceleration modulators firing the same projectile would have approximately 12 Mega-Newtons of force behind it. (Worked out at Warp 2, i.e. 10xC)
