The Ships of the verse(how the hell ships work in firefly)

Postby seeker160 » Fri Jul 04, 2008 1:59 pm

Ive started this thread to discuss the ship we know and love in firefly

All we know is about 20 or so quotes from Kaylee
So I'm proposing we flesh out what we know using logic and a tidbit of science.

We know that most ships of the general vtol type use three types of engines

1. The maneuvering thrusters which work in a counter balanced way for turning in space

2.The turbofans on the nacelles which are for atmospheric flight

3.Then theres the interstellar engine in the butt of the ship. As far as we know there are two main types mentioned.
The trace compression block is serenity's engine and the more cheaply made gurtsler's which i figure run so hot that they need a cooling drive so the problem there is your maintaining two systems instead of one

Please correct me on any mistakes
and add in your own ideas and theory's on the ships

I'm going to post a version of the standard design template for a firefly class transport. these design are base off the ship Serendipity of the Sim
Firefly-objectsinspace
Not all facts are cannon actually most are invented because of lack of real specs

Basic starship information
Type :Firefly class transport
Length : 195'
Beam :125'
Height : 65'
Decks : 2
Mass : 6,000 tons
Crew : Minimum 2, Quarters for 7
Armament :None on civilian version
Fuel Capacity: 125 tons (800 hours)
Cargo Capacity: 4-ton bomb bay;
Cargo Capacity: 300 tons
Passenger Capacity: 2 singles, 2 doubles

Speeds

Normal Cruise :Mach 5

Zoe: Proximity alert. Must be coming up on something. Wash: [alarmed.] Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's FLYING this thing?! [deadpan.] Oh right, that would be me. Uh, back to work.

Mal: They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself.

Thanks for the link though that was more on he looks of the ship. I want to flesh out the way the ships work. The technology of serenity for example what the heck does the compression coil do all we know is if it bust your drifting in the black.
