Med/Sci - What to do when you're bored?

Postby FSF Hawg » Mon Apr 30, 2012 11:50 am

I'm asking this separately in all three of the major fields to keep them specific to each field. Not all plots can have a major role for each department type. So, when Med/Sci doesn't have a lot going on, what do you do to pass the time and stay active? Or do you find yourself zoning out and not participating as much?

I hope my medical staff on Akira comments here... they're really good at it. :)

I'd probably blow something up though to cause some casualties... that way I'd have to save their lives and would then have something to do.

When playing medical I'll usually either do my standard character development (I know, I'll probably mention it everywhere on these) or try to tap another inactive department for their physicals or another medical examination of some sort. Of course it also gives a chance to catch up on the the medical reports (in game) or perhaps pursue medical pet projects.

Again, be thinking about specific actions for each Dept, or else these three topics could have just been one single topic.

MED/SCI is another field that I don't play often (again, because of the science jargon), although MED is where I started out and I loved it - namely b/c I had a great CMO who kept our dept active even when we weren't.

Yeah, physicals always seem to be a favorite to do - especially when a new CMO takes over. But, if done really well, it can actually really help all characters learn more about the other characters. I think this is a great time for the MED dept to help other characters build and expand their Bios.

We'd run mini experiments, testing samples and what not. Of course we'd do inventory now and then.

My CMO also always had people coming in with breaks and bruises, just from every day type of stuff, so we at least had that and it felt more realistic too. Sometimes we'd have a very involved surgery which would keep us going for at least a whole (live) sim.

For medical -- physicals, or just discussing the situation, planning for upcoming action, etc.

For science -- there's always research to do on the surrounding system from an astrophysics point of view, or you can hang out in the labs and do experiments. All of my science characters have always been workaholics so that's always been my go-to for them when there's nothing else to do.

I once wrote a guide for someone with jargon and things to do as a science officer...I'll have to see if I can dig it up again.

Just curious, but when doing "experiments", what types of activity are you doing to be active? And I am thinking about specifically in a chat sim here, but are you just "mixing chemicals" and that type of stuff? Or are you doing specific experiments, or what?

Both in Medical and Science, I've been in departments where we had ongoing projects (researching a plague, studying particular geologic samples) that we would mess with and make progress on when things were quiet. Usually we've been more specific than just "mixing chemicals" -- astrophysical studies of surrounding bodies in space, biological research of live samples picked up on previous away missions, etc. -- though that's a totally OK thing to do if you're not comfortable with the jargon and just want to use the time to play off your fellow characters, I'd say.

For My Characters in Medical.. They will do up reports, Calibrate equipment.. sanitize equipment and surgical bays, stock inventory.. treat the occasional sprain/break/burn/headache/nausea from crew members. Sometimes they will be studying information on the newest advancements in the Medical field.

Science department.. depending on my charries area of expertise, she/he would be running experiments or gathering data comparisons. As was mentioned before, Science always has some long term studies.. and work can be done on those.

And sometimes.. I make it so my charries are off shift and relaxing.. whether in the Lounge or the mes hall.. or taking a run.. I try to keep them doing something.

The AMO I play decided early on that Sick Bay on Aquinas should be a place people didn't avoid...so he put in a wonderful antique coffee urn and keeps a supply of decadent natural coffee up and brewing. I also keep current on several medical journals as needed and have the occasional minor casualty walk in.

In one chat sim (not in FSF), I played the CMO. I created a second character, an AMO, to roleplay with myself. :) I told the CO and XO beforehand, but the crew didn't know they were both me.

Actually, the crew didn't like my CMO char and often took it out on me. (The char had an attitude.) When I joined as the AMO, I got warned about myself.

As far as I know, only one did. Though it was kind of funny. Roleplayed with the characters for several months. Then the CO and XO had a falling out, so we were basically doing our last sim. I didn't really bother hide it at that point. The guy was like, "Oh, I figured it out when you did blah blah blah." Lol. The others might have and chose not to say anything at that point.

Load up hypospray with some serious ill disease and make with the stabbie.

Or get into a heated argument with the CO, get thrown in the Brig and force my AMO to find some restitution to follow his/her own way without me.

My character Dr. Stuart loves too hover with the bridge crew when not there I take other duties. I ran a fire drill with NPC's in the shuttle bay created a stowaway and I used too play around with our Intel officer. My character suffers from Vernier syndrome so he complains lot about aches and pains and general aging On occasion He takes accidental naps and his medical crew pulls minor mutinies by taking over well he's asleep He reads a lot and has the occasion meal in private with his captains.
In meny ways I am pleased with the way this has worked out as it kind of revives the old Bones Jim relation ship Despite the fact that I post Dialog for my character in a scotty like accent

For my MED Charries, I'll either have them running inventory on the sickbay storerooms, reading journals, doing Physicals (it's especially fun to call the Captain from the bridge to get his/hers done, and of course RIGHT BEFORE the big firefight starts) or chasing some of the nurses/other officers around the labs.

One of my SCI Charries likes to work on Xenobiological research when she's not dealing with calibrating scans or probes. One time in sim, it backfired when she was studying an unusual fungus and she took off after the AMO in a manner somewhat reminiscent of the TOS episode "The Naked Time," only it was the spores in the air that caused the condition and ALMOST everyone that came in the Science Lab was affected. A good romp while it lasted, ((::Glares at FSF Ward :fire: ::))and one of the funnest sims I've been in for a long time. All the charries involved were skirting the PG envelope that session but the line was never crossed.

I just resurrected and recast my old Science officer character. Originally Cassandra Josephine was Songstress, lover, Scientist, Comedian And Coffee Addict.
I seem too be creating into a slightly hyperactive version of her in the Form of Cassandra Josephine Saint Clair. < I changed the name too.>

One of my characters is a CMO, and I have her helping someone (sometimes a NPC) who just walked in with an injury, or trying to get the crew in for their physical who hasn't had one yet. **coughs**merlin**coughs** Or, I sometimes bring her daughter into the sim for a little fun (think mother like daughter).
