Signature Lengths

From now on, I'd like everyone to limit signatures to four lines of text (three is preferred), at most. It really is unhealthy for our board to have one line posts and 7 line signatures.

If you find this unreasonable, then have up to 7 lines of text, but turn off your "add my signature automatically" to your posts option in your profile, and add a signature ONCE per thread.

I appreciate your cooperation.

There have been a few isolated instances of "signature abuse". So, let's recap the policy and make sure everyone is on the same page.

Text in Signatures:
* Preferred number of lines is 3 (at the regular font)
* Acceptable number of lines is 4 (at the regular font)
* Max number of lines is 7 (at the regular font) if you turn off "add my signature automatically" in your profile.

Images in Signatures:
* No sexual or hate-based items.
* Size preference is 30,000 bytes or less.
* Size maximum is 50,000 bytes.
* Height preference is 3 lines of text or less (about 60px)
* Height maximum is about 5 lines of text (about 90px)

And, if you use an image in your signature, it is highly recommended that you disable your signature for all posts after the first one in a thread.

Please keep in mind the Signature rules listed above. I have sent out a quite a few emails asking people to get their signatures corrected lately.

Been awhile since this was bumped, so here it is again. Just your friendly neighborhood Boards Director reminder. :)

About once a year I notice that signatures grow longer and longer. Please get them back to within the guidelines, or I may start sending out warnings. Thanks!

Ok, I missed bumping this last year, and I see signatures that are pushing (or exceeding) the limits. If you get a warning, well, you deserve it. ;)

The rules for Signature Lengths are getting an overhaul. This should make it easier to both comply, as well as regulate. It also gives a little more space for signatures for those who need it, but the goal is still the same -- to keep the forums from not being overwhelmed & slowed down from extensive signatures. So please review the new rules below, and make sure your signature is compliant. If you have any questions, please feel free to email the Board Director(s) at

Signature Rules:
  • Signatures must comply with all FSF Message Board Rules.
  • Images (including Avatars) must not be excessively bright or flashy.
  • Maximum file size for all images (combined) is 50KB.
  • Maximum signature height is 100px (approx 6 lines of Normal font size).
  • Maximum signature width is 700px (approx 90 characters of Normal font size).
  • The height & width may not be exceeded by the use of different font sizes and images.

Warnings will continue to be Emailed & PM'd out when needed. Failure to comply could lead to your signature being deleted.
